Assessing the rise of ransomware

How organizations are keeping up with increasing ransomware attacks.

Ransomware has been a leading cyber threat that enterprises have had to grapple with for years, but since the start of the global pandemic its impact has reached unprecedented heights.

Once the pandemic began, organizations had to quickly adapt to enable distributed workforces, which led to accelerated digital transformation initiatives that drastically expanded attack surfaces in organizations across industries. This played a key role in a massive uptick in ransomware attacks.

On average, as many as 4,000 ransomware attacks have occurred daily since January 1, 2016. In the U.S. alone, there were more than 1,300 successful ransomware attacks impacting enterprises with the deepest pockets.

This recent survey report conducted by CyberRisk Alliance’s Business Intelligence Unit gauges how North American organizations kept up with the wave of ransomware attacks in 2021. Key takeaways include:

  • The experiences that organizations had with ransomware in 2021
  • How enterprises managed risk in relation to ransomware

It’s clear that modern organizations need to get out of the mindset that their valuable information is recoverable when it comes to ransomware.
